What do Families, Educators, and Service Providers for individuals with autism all have in common? They are all stakeholders in this rapidly changing environment here in California. The CA Dept of Developmental Services is incorporating the National Standards Project's review of behavioral and educational interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) into its evidence-based guidelines for ASD intervention and in July 2009 there were significant changes to the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act that are transforming the way that services and supports are being delivered to families, and in some cases altering the IPP of the person who is served by the regional centers. These are only a few of the highlighted changes in our service delivery models.
Join us on April 15th where the implications of the evidence-based practice movement for consumers, public and private agencies, and practitioners are discussed as stakeholders learn how to distinguish reliable scientific evidence from other sources of information about interventions for ASD.

Autism
Today, 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Though there is currently no single known cause or cure, autism is treatable. Children do not "outgrow" autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention can lead to significantly improved outcomes. With the right services and supports, people with autism can live full, healthy and meaningful lives.
